Retaining Walls Certification

Certifications

Design Engineering has provided structural engineering certifications for the construction of limestone and concrete cantilever retaining walls including limestone piers for various land estates in the Perth Metropolitan Region.

Design provides practical engineering inspections and assessment of retaining walls during their construction to ensure the walls are built in accordance with the design drawings and Australian Standards. The testing of the compaction, blocks, concrete, mortar are overseen and sighted prior to the certification being released and job closed off.

The challenges overcome include inspecting hidden elements such as geofabric and ties insides the walls.

Design inspects walls independent of contractor, records all information and issues certification in case of compliant walls, schedules inspection according to blocks being laid and client specifications.

Project Brief

Outcome

  • Perform site inspections of the retaining walls during the construction to the satisfaction of the engineer signing off on the compliance of the constructed walls to the design drawings.
  • Provide certification of the retaining walls where compliant or provide recommendations for remediation

Background

Design provides practical engineering inspections and assessment of retaining walls during their construction to ensure the walls are built in accordance with the design drawings and Australian Standards.

The testing of the compaction, blocks, concrete, mortar are overseen and sighted prior to the certification being released and job closed off.

Inspection reports are completed for each inspection which details the walls that were inspected, any non-compliances and other useful information.

Project Objectives

The objective was to create a jetty made from different materials, to replicate the different eras the fishermen had worked in. The sculptures represent the past and future, and symbolise the generations that have worked together to forge the industry that is today worth over a billion dollars.

Challenges

The constructed walls being inspected can sometimes hide key elements such as geofabric and ties inside the wall and can be difficult to sight without photographs being taken during the construction. Our office has requested walls to be excavated or core drilled to provide evidence of construction compliance.

Our Approach

Based on the design drawings, Design inspects the walls independently from the contractor and records all relevant information for reporting. Where walls are compliant and Quality Assurance (QA) is provided the certification is then provided. Design schedules the inspections according to the number of blocks being laid and as per client specifications.
