Works Depot

Structural Design

Design Engineering (as “Wilkie”) was commissioned by the City of Perth to review the existing hardstand traffic-able area at their works depot in Osborne Park and provide design solutions for the repair and construction supervision.

Based on the client’s scope of works, Wilkie developed three initial design options and provided costs for each option. Upon review of the options by the client, Wilkie finalised the design and developed tender documentation including tender evaluation. Wilkie then undertook site supervision and contract management to deliver the scheme on time and within budget.

The outcome of the project was that Wilkie prepared three design options with associated costs, Designed client preferred option and determined costs, Prepared Tender Documentation, Site Supervision and Contract Administration.

Project Brief

Outcome

  • Prepared 3 design options with associated costs
  • Design of client preferred option and determine costs
  • Prepare tender documentation
  • Site supervision and contract administration

Background

A section of the existing concrete hardstand had been damaged from heavy vehicle traffic and other area of hardstand has cracked/sunk along with several locations which have had services trenches installed poorly. These issues were a health and safety concern for the depot workers and also needed addressing to meet the heavy vehicle load requirements. The existing parking area was susceptible to ponding which left workers exposed to slipping as they exited their vehicles.

Project Objectives

The objective of the project was to replace a section of damaged concrete hardstand and repair sunken/cracked slabs which create a trip hazard for depot workers.

Challenges

The City of Perth had a limited budget for the project so the ultimate solution of complete slab replacement was not practical. A compromised solution with the intention of further works was developed. The existing slab was inconsistent which meant the design solution needed to be modified during the construction.

Our Approach

Based on the client’s scope of works, Design developed three initial design options and provided costs for each option. Upon review of the options by the client, Design finalised the design and developed tender documentation including tender evaluation. Design then undertook site supervision and contract management to deliver the scheme on time and within budget.
